The hormones may come in pill or injectable form. Its a legitimate medical treatment that [patients] need access to, and being without it can lead to negative health outcomes including suicide, Keatley said. However, HRT has its limits which is where reconstructive surgery can come into play. Masculine characteristics such as height, facial features and voice are not affected by changes in sex hormones. The Philadelphia Center for Transgender Surgery , one of only a handful of such clinics in the nation, performs breast augmentations and genital surgeries, as well as facial feminization procedures tailored to patients needs.

Can hormone therapy help protect the brain?
Hormone therapy has become less common since WHI data linked hormone use to heart disease, stroke and breast cancer, though it’s still considered the most effective treatment for some symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes. Curtis, who wasn’t involved in the new research, said she thinks the pendulum initially swung too far away from hormone therapy, and that doctors are coming to realize it may still help some women. “I think ultimately people have become aware that maybe it’s not the placebo for getting older that some may have perceived it was being marketed as, but that maybe there are benefits for it,” she told Reuters Health. Because of the risks, women shouldn’t take hormone therapy just to prevent fractures, Wactawski-Wende said. “The major indication for taking hormone therapy is for management of moderate to severe menopausal symptoms,” she told Reuters Health.

Hormone therapy, calcium may lower fracture risk
We should be talking to women about HRT again at the time of menopause as the benefits often outweigh the risks in newly menopausal females without strong family hx of breast Cancer. Also, the breast cancer risk is smaller than most people think…even smaller than being obese. October 27, 2012 at 16:51 | Report abuse | Reply MKM Thanks for your thoughtful and well-informed approach to this issue, DrJohn. It was astounding how many physicians immediaetly adopted the media conclusions on HRT after the WHI study without ever actually reading the journal article and considering all of the study’s problems and limitations. Sadly, I have also found that many docs just don’t know much about research and are therefore unable to assess study results intelligently.

Hormone therapy: Is it right for you?
If you have lasting menopausal symptoms that significantly impair your quality of life, your doctor may recommend longer-term treatment. Seek regular follow-up care. See your health care provider regularly to ensure that the benefits of hormone therapy continue to outweigh the risks, and for screenings such as mammograms and pelvic exams. Make healthy lifestyle choices. Include physical activity and exercise in your daily routine, eat a healthy diet, maintain a healthy weight, don’t smoke, limit alcohol, manage stress, and manage chronic health conditions such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure. If you haven’t had a hysterectomy and are using systemic estrogen therapy, you’ll also need a progestin.
